Sergeant Henry 'Norkey' Dewar - All Black - Hawera Memorial

'Norkey' Dewar embarked with the Main Body on 16 October 1914 with Wellington Mounted Rifles.
He was killed in action on 9 August 1915 at Gallipoli aged 33 years, his body was never recovered and he is remembered on the Chunuk Bair (New Zealand) Memorial.

'Norkey' was by profession an Ironmonger in Stratford as well as a successful All Black although sadly his All Black career was cut short by the war. Below there is a link to his All Black profile.

An obituary from the Wairarapa Daily Times mentions he went to Samoa I could find no mention of this on his record, although he did enlisted very early on in the war in August 1914.

Footballers throughout New Zealand will regret the death in action of Sergeant Henry ("Norkey") Dewar of the Wellington Mounted Rifles. "Norkey" had few equals in New Zealand at wing-forward. It was as a Taranaki representative that he made his name. He represented the amber and blacks for several seasons, and also the North Island, while he was a member of the All Black combination that toured California in 1913. The late Sergeant Dewar was also a boxer of no mean order. He was an engineer by trade, and at the outbreak of the war enlisted at once and went to Samoa with the advance party. Returning, he again volunteered for active service, and left for the front with the Wellington Mounted Rifles.  He was about thirty years of age.
